Why You Might Rent A Limo, Hummer or A Holden Statesman

Limousine (or in short Limo) is a name of a special, strangely long luxury car and are usually black (the traditional black limo is considered suitable forfunerals as black is a color of mourning in most of the western societies) or white (the traditional white limo is fitting for wedding ceremonies in western societies) in color. Employed drivers called chauffeurs mostly drive these cars.

In general Limos are owned by wealthy people but in many cases governments, big companies and broadcasters to convey their top level politicians, executives and guests respectively also own it. These cars are believed or observed as symbols of wealth.

Limousine cars, being a special luxury one have a partition in between the driver?s and passenger compartments, which is usually a sliding glass window. The partition is there so that any conversation between passengers can be kept confidential from the chauffeur.
The seat arrangement in these cars is forward facing (for passengers) with a considerable amount of foot room or foot space. There are two “jump seats”, that are mounted backward, of the driver, and they can be kept folded when not in use, but in some modern versions of limousine cars this feature is not found any more. A limo can carry seven passengers in addition to the driver. Sometimes these cars hold items of entertainment for the passengers like audio players, television, video players, and even bars along withrefrigerators. Limousines have multiple doors.

Some of the popular limousine cars are Mercedes S600 Pullman, BMW 74Il, Holden Statesman, Hummer H2, Jaguar XJ, Maybach 62, Cadillac DTS, Lincoln Town Car and others.

Though Limousine cars are considered to be a symbol of wealth and are thus thought to be owned by rich individuals but in most of the times it has been seen that only limousine service or rental companies own limos. Even those rich people who include limos as their major means of transport do not always possess a limousine. What they do is that they go for a contract with alimousine service or rental companies for a long-term basis to get the availability of the vehicle on a lease agreement.

Apart from prosperous and well off persons, anyone in need of these cars canhire it by making contact with any rental firm or organization, which offers or provide limos on lease on a short term basis (as going for long term could be very expensive for them to afford). The most frequent necessities or demand for these limos are for going to airports, balls, proms, weddings and sometimes even to funerals.

Limousines – The Ultimate Car Accessory

In the past, limousines were the symbol of success priced well out of reach of all but the rich and well-known. There is still something intriguing about the heavily tinted windows that prevent people from peering at the occupants. I am guilty of being one of the many people who will literally stop and stare at a limousine as it passes me by and try to imagine who the well-celebrated passenger is. Probability are that it might be anyone who isn’t well-known at all but simply treating themselves to a trip in a limousine as part of a special night out. It amazes me that any make of car can now be converted into alimousine and the wealth of the title-holder is matched only by the extravagance of the equipment that he or she has. The most ludicrous one I ever saw in a magazine was a Lada fitted with a whirlpool everywhere the trunk should have been.

The word ‘limousine’ really derives from a region of France called Limousin. The local shepherds wore huge outer clothing to protect themselves from the wind and
the rain while they were tending their flock. Some time later a similar garment was worn by chauffeurs to ward off the elements as they sat in the open cockpit of early
automobiles while their employer sat inside the cabin in dry comfort.

The first stretch limousine was built around 1928 by Armbruster of Arkansas. It soon became a symbol of the Roaring Twenties and was a firm favourite with the huge band
leaders of the day, including Glenn Miller. The fact that the limousine could accommodate the entire band and its instruments gained it the nickname of ‘Huge Band Bus’.

During the 30s and 40s the limousine became the status symbol that it is today and every successful person in Hollywood wanted to be seen in one, or at least getting
in and out of one!

In 1962 Armbruster joined with Stageway Coaches and the company became Armbruster-Stageway Coachbuilders who continued making limousines for the rich and well-known until 1974.

Nowadays give somebody a ride driven limousines are far more widely available for anyone to hire, even for a very small trip down the Las Vegas strip.Limousines still are the ultimate auto accessory since they still turn heads whenever one passes by.

Chauffeur drives into regional merger deal

A chauffeur company to the stars has set its sights on expansion after signing a deal with one of the North West’s leading operators.  Why does this interest XYZ?  Well it’s because XYZ specialise in chauffeur insurance and limousine insurance of course!

Chauffeur DriverChauffeur2Go, which operates a fleet of luxury cars from its base in Bamber Bridge, has merged with Manchester-based ADL Executive Cars, a group backed by former Arsenal and Everton footballer Kevin Campbell.

It will see company founder Marc Smith carry out jobs throughout Greater Manchester and see ADL begin to operate in Lancashire.

Mr Smith already works for a number of celebrity clients including the Indian poultry giant Venky’s, which owns Blackburn Rovers FC, Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini and pop stars including new X-Factor judge Tulisa.

He said: “Now we have regular access to clients and cars that I would not have had before and it gives them a foothold into the Lancashire market a lot quicker than it would have taken them to build one up.

“Instead of having a car going from Preston to Manchester Airport empty or coming back from there empty, we can be doing another job.

“A lot of work goes between Manchester and Lancashire, so it makes a lot of sense.”

He said the link-up had come when he needed to sub-contract work out to another operator due to a glut of jobs with the new owners at Blackburn Rovers.

Chicken processing group Venky’s took over the Premier League club in a £50m deal last November, leading to numerous visits to Lancashire from directors Anuradha Desai and brothers Balaji and Venkatesh Rao.

Mr Smith said: “The work with Venky’s just came out of the blue, I was in the right place at the right time.

“I do a lot of work with Manchester City and Wigan Athletic as well and I had been introduced to David Thompson (the owner of ADL) and they came and did a few jobs for me.

“They were interested in moving into Lancashire and offered me a deal to help them expand and me expand.

“We could have done something back at the start of the year but I had only just started working with them then, now I see what a good outfit they are.”

Question – new schemes for fuel cell limousine insurance?

Ah the humble limousine – symbol of the rich and famous… and also large groups of teenagers with £10 each. Still, whether we think the limousine is classy or classless there’s no denying our interest in a fuel cell model.

Fuel Cell Limousine

Indeed that’s exactly what has been introduced at Tokyo’s Narita International Airport after Honda teamed up with All Nippon Airways to offer the Honda FCX Clarity fuel cell vehicle as a limousine to passengers on international flights.

The partnership came at the request of The Research Association of Hydrogen Supply/Utilisation Technology (HySUT), which was founded in July 2009 with the goal of establishing a hydrogen supply infrastructure and improving the hydrogen business environment. Today there are more than 18 companies/associations completing phase one and phase two of its studies.

Phase one involves the “Hydrogen Highway Project” in the Tokyo area and the “Hydrogen Town Project” at Kita-Kyushu City; while phase two is being carried out in three projects: “Technical and Social Demonstration Study”; “Development of Technologies for Hydrogen Production, Transportation; and Storage Systems”; and “Demonstration study utilising Kita-Kyushu Hydrogen Town”.

The Question

Should this Japanese research and development come to fruition in the UK what would be the effects on limousine insurance?  Similar to our story about Mayor of London’s plans to make London taxis solely electric to lower emissions and the effects on taxi insurance – where does this leave the limousine insurance World.  I guess like anything we’ll be constantly faced with change and developments as technology improves and along side that the requirement for the human race to be more green and eco-friendly.

Interview with Greg Johnson: Global economic climate and the effects on limousine chauffeur insurance

An interview with USA-based limousine chauffeur, Greg Johnson and the effects of the economic climate on business and thus on chauffeur insurance and limousine insurance on a global scale.

Age: 45

Employer: Crown Limousine

How long have you been driving stretch limos for Crown Limousine? ”I’ve been doing it about 8 1/2to 9 years. I’ve been driving since like 1988, ’89. When I started out, I drove for Breece Limousine (Service) for about four years. But you never forget how to drive one of them.”

Greg Johnson

With money tighter for many in this economy, has that affected business? ”I think it’s slacked up a little bit. I can tell by the tips. The tips aren’t what they used to be. I don’t expect them to be like I used to get, because times are pretty tough right now.”

What’s the best tip you ever got? ”About $400. That was for one night, about six or seven hours of driving. It was a couple of businessmen who went to a concert. ”

How many jobs do you average a week? ”It just depends. Now it’s getting kind of slow. One time, I was driving every weekend. The majority are on the weekends.”

Have you ever had a car accident while driving someone around? ”No. I’ve never had an accident, period. I’m always cautious. When driving the car, it doesn’t slow down like a regular car. When you turn, you have to watch while you’re turning. And you’re turning wide. When you back up, you have to use the two side-view mirrors. You have people who want to go through drive-throughs. You can’t do that.”

What is probably the strangest request you ever had as a chauffeur? ”I went on a scavenger hunt for a gentleman. It was his wife’s birthday. At every stop, there were gifts. Money, gift cards, jewelry.”

What led you into this field? ”I enjoy driving; I enjoy talking to people. I like making people comfortable in the back.”

Have you ever driven for a celebrity, music artist or major political figure? ”I drove Ben Vereen,” the actor and dancer. “He was really nice. He tipped very well, too. He was real down to earth. I’ve done Peabo Bryson, Salt from Salt-N-Pepa. I did the Fat Boys.”
