While taxis and minicabs are ultimately just cars on the road, they are an iconic part of many cities around the world. London and New York City, in particular, are famous around the world for their black cabs and yellow minicabs respectively.
The black mini cabs of London have undergone a recent makeover, however, and have been painted white. These cabs are not going to be seen on the streets of London. Instead, they have been painted and transported to the Western Australian city of Perth.
The question is not why Perth, but rather why have the cabs been painted white? The reason is simply because white reflects heat and black absorbs it. If you are sitting in a black cab in an Australian city like Perth, where the average temperature in the Southern Hemisphere summer is 25°C and can reach as high as 30°C, it is going to get uncomfortable.
98 London cabs have so far been transported to Australia by the London Taxi Company, who have reported that there has been huge demand for the vehicles already.
A statement given to the ITV News website from London Taxi Company Chief Executive Evan Simeon reads, “We couldn’t have asked for a better welcome. One Perth operator who purchased a fleet of the 50 bright, white used TX4s has already had a stampede of drivers who want to be the first ones to buy a cab and partake in the trial.
“We’ve had a lot of positive interest from ex-pats, both prospective customers and drivers; what has been especially gratifying are the offers from ex-pat London Taxi drivers who not only want to buy one, but have also offered their services to train our Australian drivers on everything from the service to vehicle operation.”
London Cabs in Australia
These 98 cabs are not just a publicity stunt; there is a real feeling that more cabs could be transported in the coming months. There are likely to be more cabs headed to Perth in the near future, while government officials in the state of Victoria, of which Melbourne is the capital and main city, have also expressed an interest in taking white London cabs should they prove popular and successful in Perth.
