What is Taxi Insurance?
Here in the UK, it is a legal requirement to hold a minimum level of insurance so that you can use your vehicle on a public highway. This type of insurance is commonly referred to as private car insurance. If you are going to use your vehicle for hire to carry passengers, you will need to be licensed by your local authority and will also need to purchase taxi insurance.
Taxi insurance can also be often referred to as Private Hire insurance, Public Hire insurance, Hire & Reward insurance, Minicab insurance, or Black Cab insurance.
Why is Taxi Insurance so important?
Insuring your vehicle is a legal requirement if you want to drive it on the road. Therefore taxi insurance is important if you want to run your taxi business. Taxis are at a higher risk of accidents than other vehicles as they tend to drive more in built-up areas and also carry more passengers. Therefore, it is important that you find the right taxi insurance policy to suit you and your business.
What is the difference between Private Hire Taxi Insurance and Public Hire Taxi Insurance?
- Private Hire Insurance is what is commonly referred to as minicab insurance. Any pre-booked appointments are usually made at a minicab office or base.
- Public Hire Insurance is for taxis that offer an immediate pick up. Taxis that need this type of insurance can be flagged down in the street and the taxis will always have a taxi light on the roof of the vehicle.

Can I use my existing vehicle as a taxi?
Typical vehicles that are used for taxis are saloons, estates, and multi-purpose vehicles (MPVs). These types of vehicles are used for their size and ease of entry/exit for backseat passengers. However, it would be up to your licensing authority to establish whether or not they will agree to plate your vehicle as a licensed taxi.
Can I insure large taxis/fleet of taxis?
Yes. We have a wide range of specialist taxi insurance schemes, which can include fleet taxi insurance. Alternatively, there is also minibus insurance available for larger taxi companies.
Will my Taxi Insurance be expensive if I have not had a taxi badge for long/do not have any Taxi No Claim Bonus?
At XYZ Insurance, we have specialist schemes available for taxi drivers who do not have any taxi no claim bonus. We also have heavy discount schemes available for taxi drivers who have been driving a rental taxi or have been on someone else’s policy, if they have proof of this.
We are aware that everyone must start somewhere, so we have competitive schemes available for new badge holders.
Can I add my wife/husband to the policy for social use?
Yes. If it is acceptable to your local authority, then it is no problem.
Can I add another taxi driver to my policy?
Yes you can. Although this may increase the amount that you will pay for your taxi insurance.
